Frequently Asked Questions
What do you want to know? Just give us a call, these Crocks

Q What is bisque?
A It is a type of earthenware ceramic. You know the
stuff that tiles and mugs and plates are made of. It's tough,
long lasting and great for painting on.
Q What is glaze?
A Glaze is to ceramic, what varnish is to wood. It
is a clear, transparent, usually colourless protective coating.
Instead of painting it on, the ceramic pieces are dipped into
it, the excess is allowed to run off and the glaze is fired
in a kiln.
We do this bit because it is messy and not much fun compared
to actually painting.
Probably all the ceramic you have ever seen will be glazed.
Certainly all the ceramic dishes in your kitchen will be glazed.
The only time you are likely to feel unglazed ceramic is on
the edges and backs of tiles before you stick them on your
bathroom floor.
Q What is a kiln and what is firing?
A Unlike varnish which can dry at room temperature,
you need a very hot oven to harden the glaze. A kiln is really
just a hot oven, lined with bricks to help insulate it. It
takes about 12 hours and a peak temperature of 1000 degrees
C to completely harden the glaze. The process of hardening
the glaze with heat is called firing.
